Thanks for letting me know.

People, current advice is to restart Apache once you re-compiled the mo file. Otherwise you might experience odd results, like random skips in translations.

Maybe we can find out more about this issue.

A quick follow-up with what I have found out about I18N and gettext.  I was
not able to get gettext to work properly as long as the MO file was named
Mapbender.mo.  I was not able to get a hold of a sys admin to restart Apache
to see if that would help.  But if I recompiled the file with a different
name (and change class_locale.php to reflect the new name), gettext worked
perfectly.  I was able to make changes to the PO file and recompile MO and
it all worked well.  I will see if a restart cleans up the issue with
Mapbender.mo.
