Have you seen http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/Design ?
This covers some of the anatomy which I think you are referring to 
(although it might be a bit long winded and out of date in places).

I think Andreas had ideas about which documentation was in most need of 
a review. I'd be interested to hear his suggestions.
