Hello,

I was just wondering if someone could clear up for me how features are
supposed to be used? It sounds like a goofy question, but I'm trying to
understand the relationship between WFS features displayed as a WMS layer in
MapBuilder, vs. Querying for the layers in a feature collection to display
them, vs. Loading the features into a FeatureCollection in the map document
directly (resulting in them being displayed).

There are several reasons I ask, the first is because I've loaded a set of
road features, from ArcSDE, into geoserver as a feature type, then tried to
display it as a WMS which didn't work. For some reason there was a parsing
error and only part of the road displays. This leads me to wonder if you
can display features like that as a layer? I saw a post where someone said
that WFS is for data, and WMS is for displaying the data. In this case, I
don't know why I would have gotten a parsing error unless not all WFS
features can be loaded as a layer like that? It seems to display fine
through WMS from ArcGIS in uDig (Geoserver doesn't render it correctly in
it's demo layer viewer though, so maybe it's a geoserver bug).

Next, I'm wondering the difference because I'm playing around with editing
in Mapbuilder/Openlayers and saving them to Geoserver. After I save some
features, I can query for them and they are displayed. I seem to only be
able to assign one Feature Type per button, which makes it difficult if I
want to have several geometries returned. Does this mean that my edit
features should be a WMS layer? When should you load features into a
FeatureCollection then? And when should you use querying to return
features? I'm hoping maybe someone could clear this up, I think I just have
a misunderstanding of some of this.

Thanks for any insight I someone could give me!!

Ryan
