Probably the easiest way would be to configure your basemap (I assume a 
WMS) to embed the attribute in the output.
You can either set up your WMS with a default SLD to look they way you 
want, or alternatively, in your context.xml embed the SLD. (The second 
option may have issues if your SLD gets too long because there is a hard 
limit to the number of chars that can be sent to the server in a GET 
request).
