Jeff,
In the Model/View/Controller design, widgets like the MapPane don't 
store any data, they only display data stored in their model. In the 
case of the MapPane widget, it renders data from the Context of OWS Context.

So the event you are probably looking for is the "refresh" event which I 
believe is triggered every time the Context/OWS Context is updated.
