I tried what you said. The providers.xml could not be displayed using IE! the
error was this: "Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet." My fdo.dll
version is 3.2.0 and although the providers.xml include the lines for 'fdo
provider for shp' and 'fdo provider for sdf' these two are not shown in 'data
connection' window in mg studio! Do I have to download any extra dll's in order
to be able to connect to shp files? or not.
2) Please explain me more about getting access to files from a network share,
I really need to get access to shp files from different IP addresses and then
bring them to studio in order to make web layouts.

1) Yes, it should be there. Try opening the "providers.xml" with Internet
Explorer to ensure that it is valid. The server must be restarted for any
changes to take effect.
2) It is supposed to work that way.
3) The provider will have access to any and all files that the MapGuide Server
service process has access to. This is usually the local system account. It
will not have access to any network drives you have set up, and will use the
local account for remote authentication. In other words, unless the files are
in a share with anonymous access, it will probably not get access. Perfomance
wise, I would also recomend against using files from a network share.
