I have not yet speed tested the new server.
I can confirm that OpenLayers will download a larger image than necessary, which is nice for panning, but an overhead otherwise.
Up until now, the 2.0 seems backwards compatible with 1.2.

There is a provider in the Fusion demo, that actually use OpenLayers.
If you install the 2.0 Beta, there is a provider in "www\Fusion\lib\OpenLayers.js".

With that provider, it is fairly easy to get the Digitizing samples working.
