Yes, you have to use Mercator. To make the tiles match perfectly across the whole world, you will need to use a custom Mercator rather than the default one in MapGuide (last time I did it, I had to hardcode the projection into MapGuide). I think that if you restrict yourself to a small region, you can get away with the Mercator that already exists in MapGuide and some tiny translation tweaks to make it all align perfectly.
