You can also add data by manipulating the APIs through the web forms under /mapguide/mapagent/index.html. This can be a bit painful though, especially if you are trying to add managed data.
I'm surprised that Maestro is crashing for you so often though; it's working fine in my test cases... What operations are you performing when you see crashes?
