Rather than using the layerfactory method, have you tried the MaestroAPI:

Using the MaestroAPI, you can access the "PointTypeStyle" (and all other
properties),
as a class rather than Xml.

Look at the class definition of the feature source it (the layer) is
referencing. More specifically, look at the geometry property and see what
geometry types it supports. This will correspond with what styles you can
