Yes, that sounds correct.
What happens if you preview the FeatureSource ?
On the map you must enter the extent of the data, is the entered data
correct?
Is the layer visible at the current scale?
Is the layer visible in the map?
Does the server log reveal any information?

If you use SHP, it should be straightforward.
