We have seen issues where the DB underlying the ArcSDE is Oracle and the geometry is SDO_GEOM. Other combinations are pretty much reliable. Is this your ArcSDE server set-up? As it all goes through the SDE DLLs it shouldn't matter. The other thing is to get the SDE admin to confirm the instance with 'sdemon' and you *cannot* connect to the server with an IP address - it must be a resolvable name.
