I am using Feature Joins for production purposes and the performance is satisfactory on large datasets as long as the pooling is enabled with the SDF FDO Provider.
I try to split features into those that are critical requiring dynamic joins and those that are static and can be batchscripted to be done on a scheduled basis. This allows an optimum map performance without losing the ability of having layers show live database updates. Still using 1.2 release - will be upgrading to the latest over the holidays, so I havent yet seen the gains made with the new version. The 1.2 release has significant issues in regards to join operating properly - so the data and the key IDs have to be spot on to display properly.
