Hi James,

Thank you for your solution. I tried and succeeded.
Currently, I am investigating the same thing using APIs.

Saravana,

In Mapguide Studio create a new load procedure and browse to the dwg file,
then just follow the steps setting the CAD layers, coordinate system,
destination and etc. Then click the Load Resources. Now you should have a
SDF (named same as the dwg name) file in the
Repositories/Library/DataFiles/xxxx folders.

Hi James,

I am a newbie. I want to import a DWG file (DWG -> SDF) into MapGuide using
MapGuide studio.

Can you tell me the procedure.

Thank you in advance,

Saravana

Andrew,

Wow none of your dwgs can be opened in Studio? I just created a load
procedure to load a dwg that started of in R12 vanilla AutoCAD opened up
fine for me in 2010 Studio and create the SDF ok.

For what it's worth - I've never found Studio (any version) able to open a
single one of my dwgs. I wouldn't recommend that - I'd go along with the DXF
suggestion...you can then use something like ArcView (or maybe MapWindow
could do it) to import the dxf and export as a shp file).

Correct, but you either spend countless hours trying to write a program that
will be out of date with the next release, possibly infringing on

or Studio) that will pay for itself...the right tool for the job.

AFAIK, the DWG is a proprietary format.
There exists an OpenDWG alliance with a DWG library,
but calling it "open source" is incorrect in my opinion.

It is non-trivial to understand the DWG file format,
especially since the 2004 version came out.
I don't think any open source projects support DWG.

If you have access to AutoCAD or similar,
try exporting it as DXF as that is an open format:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AutoCAD_DXF

Your easiest bet is to purchase MapGuide Studio which
can read in DWG files, and store them as SDF's (I think?).
You can then use FDOToolbox to convert them to SHP.
However, the current license model requires you to purchase
MGE to get a copy of Studio, so that may be too much.

Otherwise you can look at FME Universal Translator,
which is capable of converting just about anything:
