I can't reproduce this in house. 1) The exception getting thrown when you zoom seems to be an important detail we are missing here 2) When you say you are updating the database via PHP are you using the MapGuide API or your own PHP coding and ODBC connection? 3) Are you using Apache or IIS? If IIS have you modified the connection limit setting to prevent problems? 4) What browser (and version are you using)?
For the server to crash it suggests that something is out of sync such as old or new dlls are mixed somehow? Was the install/upgrade a clean wipe of directories?
