The extent is a bit tricky, because some provides do not report this in
the SpatialContext.
Here is a .Net example of how to read it:

The coordinate system can be read from the "GETSPATIALCONTEXTINFO"
operation.
If you need it for verification purposes, you can create a test
FeatureSource with Maestro,
and click the "Refresh" button on the coordinate system override to see
what projection the SHP file
reports.
Just a thought, you are uploading all the required shp files right?
like:
file.shp
file.dbf
file.idx
etc...
?
It won't work without those.
