The area polygon functionality (Interactive tool for measuring area) was logged at Autodesk Partner Center and was logged under SR# 1-7641347461 as a change request for the future release of MGE (> 2010).
If you are using MGE, you might try it out maybe already in Spring 2010, if it will be implemented in 2011 version. I hope the MGOS community gets the tool as well.
