Apparently, with PNG8 format, selection color do not have alpha value. Since global image format and selection overlay format can be set indipendently, a workaround is to set image format to PNG8 and selection overlay format to plain PNG (that correctly uses alpha channel). Selection overlay images are usually small and simple, thus PNG images are just a little bigger than PNG8 counterparts.
