In Maestro, I specified a coordinate system override on the GDAL feature source.  Then I hacked up the extents on the map definition to get the PNG image on the screen.  It looks as though MapGuide does not pick up the spatial extent properly from the png but still knows where the image is.  I have attached an MGP with my test files.  I took a guess on the coordinate system...

 

I also used an external data file path (alias) when building the feature source – “Gemtec”
