The only thing that can be considered backwards compatible is the mapagent http interface, this is evidenced by the fact that Maestro can work with releases of MapGuide as old as 1.2.0 (probably even older, but I don't think anybody would run such an old version in production these days).
The official web tier API (MapGuideDotNetApi) is a different matter. Code you write now should work for future releases, but may not be the case for older releases.
