Ya, that's what I thought too - but then I read this thread from

http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/transparency-and-gdal-again-td1808906.html If you go down to Andy's first comment there, he seems to say that he's has gotten tifs and jpgs to be transparent using the GDAL...I'm just not sure on the way that he got that to work - ie, was it only by patching that line of code that Triaian posted after Andy's post?
