Debian 2.6?  That does not seem to be listed in Distrowatch.  Are you using a 
variant of Debian?

From what I recall, FDO compiles older versions of xerces and xalan (as does 
MapGuide).  Depending on the Linux distro, the gcc compiler may not 
successfully compile the older sources.  I think gcc 4.1 works.
