Thanks Gordon for your reply! The issue got fixed after installing the latest release of SQL Server Native Client. Turns out the error was caused by an older minor release (from 2012).
It seems that the latest version of the Native Client actually works with TLS 1.2, even though it’s not officially documented and the Native Client is no longer supported by Microsoft.
