Dear Maphist members, I am writing to ask for help with a puzzle I am not able to crack. My question is: can there be a laid paper without chain-lines? I just bought a Hollar´s long view of Prague (to be found mostly in Merian), the quality and recorded catalogue state suggest it must have been printed probably in Antwerpen not later then cca 1700 - but the paper (old on sight and touch) is without any visible chains. But wove paper could not have existed than... So I am just totaly lost... Could not you help me with an explanation? Thank you!
