It certainly is the case that the cartography displays in the corridor
"gallery" outside the Geography and Map Division at the Library of
Congress say much about their priorities. I'll look forward to seeing
the maps of Jedediah Hotchkiss there.
However, I might make the polite suggestion that, although Hotchkiss
was clearly a gifted mapmaker, much of Hotchkiss' cartography might have
been produced by that most traditional of cartographic practices, i.e.,
using others' maps to produce one's own, or cartographic materials like
the captured field notebook of William Luce of the Union Topographic
Engineers, for one example. And although Hotchkiss' "accuracy" is
commendable, his considerable gifts were devoted to the perpetuation of
slavery, and I for one sing "Hallelujah!" that he and his fellow
Confederates lost the war.
