At the recent meeting in Santiago, Chile of the International Cartographic
Association, ICC2009, a number of prizes were awarded. Not surprisingly,
these were for current cartography.
In addition, there was a 'Public Vote' and it went to Spain for:
Ramon J. Pujades i Bataller. Les cartes portolanes: la representació
medieval d'una mar solcada. [In Catalan, with English text 'Portolan charts:
the medieval representation of a ploughed sea']. (Barcelona: Institut
Cartogràfic de Catalunya; Institut d'Estudis Catalans; Institut Europeu de
la Mediterrània; Lunwerg, 2007). [With a DVD featuring the charts and
selections of the atlases cited.] ISBN: 10: 8497854144. 13: 9 788497854146.
This is a thoroughly deserved award for a notable work, which still needs to
be more widely distributed. No future study of early portolan charts can
ignore it. Its entire text is available in English.
