This thrice-yearly journal with articles on maps, the history of cartography, and exploration is the only journal of its kind in the Americas. Below is information on the issue just published. WILLIAM WOOLDRIDGE collects Virginia maps. He encountered the English chancery cases on John Worlidge the surveyor in the course of family research, but is not related to him. HAROLD E. MEINHEIT is a former American diplomat who served in a number of Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam. He is the author of "Library of Congress Asian Collections: An Illustrated Guide" and has written about early European and Vietnamese maps of Vietnam. LOUIS CARDINAL was for many years the senior early cartography and architecture records specialist with the government of Canada. HUBERT O. (BERT) JOHNSON, a past president of WMS and frequent contributor to "The Portolan," is a veteran of six ICHCs and is looking forward to 2011 in Moscow. He has an interest in formal instruction of the history of cartography. HOWARD LANGE, a former American diplomat, is President of the Washington Map Society. JOHN DOCKTOR is Webmaster and database administrator of the Washington Map Society. JOEL KOVARSKY is proprietor of The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books. P.J. MODE, a lawyer in New York City, has collected maps for almost 30 years. In recent years, he has been collecting maps primarily intended to communicate not geographical data but political, religious, moral or other non-geographical information (or misinformation). DOROTHY RAPHAELY is a map colorist and collector. Also active in the book arts and calligraphy, she thinks of herself as a modern scribe. RICHARD PFLEDERER is the author of a series of five detailed catalogues of portolan charts in major libraries. His most recent work, "Census of Portolan Charts and Atlases," was published in 2009. FREDRIC (FRED) SHAUGER is a map collector living in New Jersey. His modest collection includes maps from the "Age of Discovery" of places to which he has traveled. A member of many map societies, he is current Vice President of the New York Map Society. RODNEY W. SHIRLEY is perhaps best known for his definitive work "The Mapping of the World: Early Printed World Maps 1472-1700," now in its fourth edition; his most recent book is "Courtiers and Cannibals, Angels and Amazons - The Art of the Decorative Cartographic Titlepage", reviewed in this "Portolan." JOHN HYMAN (1922-2008), was for many years a Research Associate in the Department of Collections at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia.
