Alfred, As discussed in New York, I am in possession of a copy of the map which would appear to come from an unrecorded 3rd example of the map, which does not match the Perugia copy and which lacks the Visscher monogram. I am in the process of dating the copy, which I would guess is from the late 19th or early 20th century and provides evidence of an unrecorded example of the the map, which lacks the decorative borders present in the Perugia copy (which is bound into a Mercator Composite atlas in 5 sheets (the 5th being the decorative borders) and lacks the Visscher insignia in the bottom right corner of the example illustrated on the BNF website. Has it ever been reproduced? AM As far as I know there are three main articles on the Mercator 1537 wall map of the Holy Land that are significant (there are a few others, but of little relevance). The primary sources are 1- Almagia 1927 (in Italian) on the single surviving example discovered in Perugia Biblioteca Comunale This article comes with a facsimile reprint It is somewhat hard to find, because it is a separate issue, but no doubt the LoC has it 2- Destombes 1972 on the single surviving example of a later state issued by Claes Jansz Visscher, discovered by Marcel Destombes in the BN Paris. 'Un nouvel Exemplaire de la Carte de Palestine de Mercator de 1537'. (in French) in: Annalen van de Oudheidkundige Kring van het Land van Waas, Vol. 75 (1972) pp. 19-24. Reprint in: Marcel Destombes (1905-1983). Contributions sélectionées à l'Histoire de la Cartographie et des Instruments scientifiques (still available from the publisher) That example is without the decorative borders and is shown in Ken Nebenzahls book on maps of the Holy Land. A full treatment of the Mercator 1537 wall map is given in the great 1994 Mercator book: 3- Catherine Delano Smith and Elizabeth Morley Ingram: 'De kaart van Plaestina'. In: Gerardus Mercator Rupelmundanus (Marcel Watelet ed.) Antwerpen: Mercatrorfonds Parisbas, 1994. pp. 268-283. In Dutch, and a French edition from the same year. This book is out of print but second hand copies are available on the internet It elaborately discusses the following chapters - geographical contents - biblical contents - context of the map - religious context - history of the map of Palestine - the influence of Mercators depiction of Palestine These three articles cover almost everything. I have all three here, if you wish I gladly scan them for you. There are a few more but not relevant and/or obsolete.
