Davids Woodwards study is important, but in structure and  establishment
too small, and based on a small selection of the material  available. You
therefore better use Briquets "Dictionnaire historique des  marques du
papier des leur apparition vers 1282 jusqu'en 1600"(Genève,  1907). This
book counts as the basic reference for European watermarks  before 1600,
reproducing 16,000 watermarks out of a collection of 40,000  tracings made
in European archives.
