I've just had notification of the death of Jacques Bertin, on May 3,
in Paris. Of course, Bertin did not contribute to history of
cartography, but he was certainly a prominent figure of the XXth
century history of cartography as a discipline, through his
theoretical work on "Semiologie graphique" (graphical semiotics)
