To Paul Hughes et al I had a similar problem when commenting on an interesting 'social' titlepage by A H Dufour (no.96 in my 2009 book 'Courtiers & Cannibals, Angels and Amazons: the Art of the Decorative Cartographic Titlepage)'. I concluded with the sentence 'In some reference works the first names attributed to Dufour may be cited as Adolphe Hippolyte but this appellation is in error'. Unfortunately I can't now trace the evidence that led me to be so positive--it was what I concluded at the time. In the reference note for this entry I give acknowledgement to Catherine Hofmann of the Biblotheque Nationale in Paris for helpful information on Dufour but I don't want to attribute my conclusion as to his first names to her alone.
