Susan, Thanks - this is a start! Kevin From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Susan Ford Sent: Monday, September 13, 2010 10:45 PM To: Discussion group for map history Subject: Re: [MapHist] 1781 Japanese Translation Help Kevin I asked a colleague in linguistics with some Japanese (William Steed) who offers the following in case of use: "I can't translate them well - my Japanese is far too rusty and this isn't standard Japanese (even for the time, I suspect). For 1781, it's written in a pretty colloquial style, which I suspect is also a dialect. It doesn't look like a Ryukuan dialect though. It does have a description of some of the contents (from picture 1): 11 larger islands in total, 260 villages (in the smaller Ryukyus), something like "In the south, from southern Taiwan to the Ryukyu mountains are the same class". Maybe this might help a little, but I don't think I can add anything else without going beyond my knowledge into pure speculation. I am wondering if there is anyone out there skilled in Tokugawa Japanese who might be able to help me translate that attached text blocks?
