Dear Peter, My friend and colleague, Gerhard Tiedemann (emeritus SOAS), has sent me the appended message which should interest those interested in early German language maps of China. Do you think you could run it? Bruce Fetter ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, March 17, 2011 4:39:50 PM Subject: [MapHist] DuHald Maps in German edition For your information: While looking for something else in my attic, I came across a biography of the Jesuit Ernbert Fridelli (born in Linz, Austria). He was involved in the preparation of the maps for nearly all the Chinese provinces and beyond. On the basis of these Chinese maps, the French geographer J.B. d'Anville prepared a set in Paris, published in 1735. The same set of maps was also included in Du Halde's Description de la Chine , also published in 1735. Several French editions were subsequently published. The first German edition did not appear until 1843, published in Vienna by Stephan Endlicher. This edition managed to publish only five maps ( Atlas von China nach Aufnamen der Jesuiten-Missionare ). Because Endlicher died, the rest of the atlas never saw the light of day. However, this edition corrects some of the shortcomings and d'Anville's omissions in the French edition. This was possible because a set of the original Chinese maps had found their way to Vienna. Best wishes, Gerhard _______________________________________________ MapHist: E-mail discussion group on the history of cartography hosted by the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Utrecht.
