To Al Moldovan, et al Thank you for your emails Earlier this year I made a note to go up to London and examine the examples of the 'Montano' world map in Bibles and loose in several institutional collections. Unfortunately I haven't yet done so as I had a hip dislocation and then more recently have been bed-bound with a prolonged bout of laryngitis. But I thank Al Moldovan, and others, for their comments. The photographic data I have strongly suggests that there were two distinct plates-the second (Tully map) illustrated as plate 107-with perhaps several states relating to textual changes. However I don't have images of the verso, only the recto (front) of the maps. Also, where these only appear as letterpress changes to text on the verso some collectors prefer to call them 'variants'. One really needs to have examples of all plates/states/variants laid out in front of one to determine a date sequence. If someone beats me to the gun in completing this analysis I shall be only too pleased! With further reference to your above noted e-mail may I make sure I understand your comments properly. Plate # 107 in your Mapping the World is of the "Tully" map, is that correct? Is there a letter press entry on the reverse, "Orbis....."? Are you saying that the pictured map is a third state? The absence or presence of the letter- press entry doesn't influence the state of the map which depends only on changes in the plate.
