Larry, On the train on my way to Johns Hopkins for a conference this morning I read the following quote in a Times article on the Budget.... "...the Library of Congress took the largest percentage cut in the Legislative Branch budget amounting to 13.4 million dollars over the next six months with much deeper cuts expected for the next fiscal year. "This is the largest cut in the institutions history and coming after four years of flat budgets there is not a great deal left to cut," said a Library official who asked not to be named for this article, "it is going to mean changes in the fundamental nature of the Library, in what we can acquire and in the services we can provide." When pressed for more details on where the cuts would come from the official commented that everything is on the table at this point and that most of the cuts would have to come from staff furloughs, attrition, and the closing of some of the more specialized and lesser used reading rooms, like those of the European, Asian and Geography and Map Divisions.
