Interesting, yes - but by no means original. Over here in 'Little England' a considerably smaller water channel separated the threatening German armed forces (especially Luftwaffe) from attack and subsequent intended invasion of the UK, and similar cloth (etc.) camouflaging was much used; also dummy guns, and (pre-June 1944 'D Day' crossing to Normandy) 'armed vehicles' - both individual and as pretend invasion armies.
