As I recall, Lew Wallace, who would probably have been of an
appropriate age to be a Major in the Union Army, served in the Corps
of Engineers. William Henry Harrison gave Lew an appointment to West
Point which would also fit with the Corps of Engineers. Wallace also
wrote Ben Hur and several other books after finishing his Army
service.
You might have some success trying to track down a complete
carto-bibliography with this fuller name on it. As well, several of
his great grandchildren are still around so you might pursue finding
their names and asking them about the maps. I thought about googling
and wikipedia, but I have a presentation, with a demonstration of some
software I've been working on, to make next Tuesday and I want it to
be perfect.
Hope this helps. It would be pretty cool for LoC to have the actual
folio to display during Civil War Maps Day.
