I am grateful to Joel Kovarsky for pointing out that this map was the subject of a paper delivered at last year's annual meeting of the Society for the History of Discoveries http://www.sochistdisc.org/2010_annual_meeting_abstracts.htm The abstract alone shows that the essential questions about the map's authenticity were both asked and answered.
