The 12th Symposium for the Study of Globes, Jena , September 29 to October 1, 
2011 will take place in Jena ( Germany ), September 29 to October 1, 2011. The 
symposium is organised by the International Coronelli Society for the Study of 
Globesin cooperation with the Ernst Haeckel Haus, the Institute for the History 
of Science, Medicine and Technology at the Friedrich Schiller University , Jena 
( Germany ). 

  

The symposium will take place in the ‘Rosensäle’ [Rose Salons] of the Friedrich 
Schiller University Jena, Fürstengraben 27, 07743 Jena , and will be opened at 
10 am on Thursday, September 29. 

  

Themes of the symposium are all aspects of the study of globes, especially the 
history of globes, globes in their historical and socio-cultural context, globe 
makers, especially Erhard Weigel and the globes made by the Geographical 
Institute Weimar, globe related instruments such as armillary spheres, 
planetaria and telluria. 

  

Languages: German and English (no interpreters available)

1&2, 07743 Jena ) 

  

Thursday, September 29, 2011 

  

Forenoon: opening of the symposium, followed by keynote speech and lectures 

Afternoon: lectures 

Evening: guided tour through the Optical Museum 

  

  

Friday, September 30, 2011: 

  

Forenoon and afternoon: lectures 

Evening: closing of the symposium, followed by General Assembly of the 
International Coronelli Societyand Farewell Dinner at the restaurant Zur 
Noll(Oberlauengasse 19, 07743 Jena ) 

  

  

Saturday, October 1, 2011 

  

Weimartour 

  

Forenoon: guided tour of the exhibition “The World from Weimar – the History of 
the Geographical Institute” at the City Museum , followed by a guided tour of 
the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek with special attention being paid to its 
valuable globe collection 

Afternoon: guided tour through Weimar or workshop “Globenbibliographie” (in 
German) 

  

  

REGISTRATION FEE: 100 € 

(includes refreshments and coffee during the breaks, the Farewell Dinner at the 
traditional and stylish restaurant Zur Noll in Jena , the trip to Weimar , two 
guided tours in Weimar , and copies of the proceedings of the symposium, to be 
published in: Globe Studies. The Journal of the International Coronelli Society 
2013)
