MONTHLY NOTICE
"The First Ordnance Survey Map"

An illustrated presentation on the first of the one-inch maps of
England and Wales, which started publication in 1805 (the Survey's "inch to the
mile" series): its development and publication and its transition into the map
that followed it. Attention will be given to features to be found on the map
relevant to the speaker's research as a cartobibliographer. Note will be made
of the collection at the University of Pennsylvania in which he will be
researching during this visit from the U.K.
The speaker is an independent scholar, a member of the Charles Close
Society for the Study of Ordnance Survey Maps and an author extensively
published by the Society. As a musician, his established profession, he was a
contributor to "The New Grove Dictionary" (1980) and this year's "Eighteenth
Century Music".
NOTE: The Directors are very pleased to announce two new members to
Philobiblon: Alexander Clark Johnston and Laurie Rizzo, both of the University
of Delaware Library. Sympathy is expressed on the surprise passing of member
Ed Robertson last April and also noted is the resignation of member Glenys
Waldman.
NOTE: For the convenience of members nominating potential new members to the
Club the Club's Nomination Form is either attached or included in this Notice.
It is not required but helpful. Questions on membership: Carmen D.
Valentino, Membership Chair.
NOTE: Scheduled meeting dates for the 2011-2012 season are October 11, November
8, and December 13, 2011 and January 10, February 14, March 13, April 17, 2012.
Speakers will be announced as we progress through the season but talks on
Benjamin Franklin as publisher, Samuel Pennypacker as collector, and the
Moravian archives are expected as well as speakers from U. of PA, Lehigh, and
Harrisburg are in the works.
NOTE: Last May's Club tour of the Masonic Temple drew 16 members into a
one-hour walk through the rooms of the building and a behind-the-scenes tour of
the Library and Archives stacks by Glenys Waldman. The Directors thank those
members who have given new Special Events sites to consider for this season.
NOTE: The Club continues to search for a member who is able and interested in
becoming the webmaster for the Club ... a position of honor and responsibility.
We have been without a webmaster for several years and our website has
emigrated from its original server and resides within Google. The public
façade of the Club is reflected via this internet access and attention is
needed for updating and solving our member database status! Interested parties
should let one of the Directors know their interest and they will be contacted
(by Lynne
Farrington).

NOTE: The dinner will be arranged at the Franklin Inn Club before the meeting
at six-thirty p.m. Cocktails will be served from six until six-thirty. Guests
may be invited to the dinner as well as to the meeting, at a charge for dinner
and cocktails of $35 for members and $40 for guests. Please reserve by phone,
email, or fax by 12:00 p.m. Monday, October 10th. Dinner and meeting are at
the Franklin Inn Club, St. James and Camac Streets, Philadelphia, PA.
