Astute readers of the "History of Cartography" newsletter may already know this
but the HofC Project has now made volumes 1 and 2 (books 1-3) freely accessible
as .pdfs online via http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/HOC/index.html

Volume One:
Cartography in Prehistoric, Ancient, and Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean

Volume Two:
Book 1: Cartography in the Traditional Islamic and South Asian Societies

Book 2: Cartography in the Traditional East and Southeast Asian Societies

Book 3: Cartography in the Traditional African, American, Arctic, Australian,
and Pacific Societies

These are excellent reference sources that any serious students of the history
of cartography, cartography, or history should be aware of.
