To Tom Crawford and the Emblem on cover of Blaeu Atlas Novus, 1645.
In case you have not seen it yet, I have found useful for researching
this kind of heraldic images:Les *marques de collections de dessins &
d'estampes : marques estampillées et écrites de collections
particulières et publiques ... / par Frits Lugt. - Amsterdam :
Vereenigde drukkerijen, 1921. - XI, 596 p.; that has been reprinted
later with supplements. Good luck,

Dear MapHisters,
I am currently writing my undergraduate dissertation on Blaeu's Atlas
Novus of 1645. It is dedicated to Joseph Hill (1625-1707) a
nonconformist minister who spent much time in the United Provinces
(Alumni Cantabrigienses). On the front cover there is an emblem which
I am having trouble deciphering. It is of a bird gorged with a crown
and a cresset or beacon ablaze with a ladder.
Would anyone know of whom or what this emblem may represent? I have
posted a photo online:
