Parecer de Hernando Colon. 13 April 1524 La primera es caminando ó navegando por línea reta que no sea paralela a la equinocial, verbigratia, partiendo del lugar que esta en 30 grados de altitud por el poniente y tomando una quarta del maestral, cuamdo me allare en la altura de 31 grado sabré quy estoy mas al poniente del lugar donde parti tantas leguas como corresponden al dicho grado; añadiendo la proporcion que cabe en haberme desviado de la via del poniente le dicha cuarta, ó por el consiguiente la que cabe á medio viento, si medio ó mas me hobiese apartado; pero este manera es muy dificultosa por la imposibilidad que hay de caminar el navío por reta línea, pues vemos que los tiempos no siempre sirven, y que las mares y corrientes estorban, y aun los mesmos que gobiernan una hora que otra se descuidan á dar lemeadas, por lo qual es manifiesto que podria venir en gran perjuicio á alguna de las partes.
