local telephone data.
The original data for everything you see sold on local switch locations is
from TelCordia's (formerly BellCore) Local Exchange Routing Guide (LERG).
Locations are by street address (not very geo-codeable when addresses such
as Main St. or 9 miles north of ... appear) and V&H coordinates (which can
be converted to Lat/Long via a program also for sale by them, but again,
may not coincide with exact equipment location, though usually does) Gives
you all sorts of data about the switch, some reliable, some not. You can
find info about the product on TelCordia's website. BTW, you'll also pick
up wireless, paging, and CLEC switches as well.
I've used On-Target's ExchangeInfo (not Plus) product in association with
the LERG. It's OK for big picture stuff, though can be shaky at small
details because telephone exchanges can commonly have exclaves/enclaves and
other complexities. Contrary to common belief, telephone numbers don't
necesarily correspond to contiguous geographic areas. That said, I haven't
seen better, just wish I could.
You will find very little (reliable) on fiber routes. For example, Bell
Atlantic wanted to know where CLECs in NY were running their fiber. The
best way they found to do it was to ask their field people to report when
they saw cable that wasn't BA. They ended up with some interesting maps
that way. You may be able to get individual CLECs to give you a vague map,
since one selling point for them is to have a building on their network.
Lot of work talking to each CLEC though. Incumbent carriers will not give
you this info.
Long Distance Companies
Can't say much here. There may be commercial sources. They are not going
to be based on any sort of comprehensive collection effort as with local
since there is no need for LD companies to know about competitors'
networks. I would like to hear about what you find out.
