An easy way to calculate the area of overlapping polygons from two MapInfo
tables is to use the "set target" function.

Select all from table1
Click on OBJECT>SET TARGET
Select all from table2
Click on OBJECT>ERASE OUTSIDE
The area remaining in table2 is the total area of overlap

** make sure you revert your changes to table2 or make a copy for this
purpose ahead of time.**

Hopefully this works and I haven't totally misunderstood your question.
