I can confirm that I have seen both of your messages.
However a good reply is not so easy! If I was going to do this I think I
would develop a program to read the table of styles ( embedded inside
each MAP file ) and edit these direct. I would then have a program that
allowed me to select a sample file and then automatically edit all the
MAPs in the same directory. Naturally this assumes that you would move
all the MAP files to be treated into this one directory.
The "couple of hundred" implies to be that the process must be automated
as outlined above.
The styles table defines a style for each unique style within a MAP
file, but then the objects refer to the table. Therefore when you update
one style you update all the objects that reference it.
