I've had mixed success with this approach.  It generally works just fine
and, sorry to say, I can't tell you why it goes awry when it does.  The
only correctable problem I can remember is the labels problem (isn't it
always labels?). I find that if you add text to a layout and try to make it
look like a label from the map window (say, a road name), strange things
can happen.  The text can get flipped in at least three and more like four
or five dimensions; upside down, backwards, end to end and inside out come
to mind.  So, try not to add text to a layout.  Other problems I've had are
a little more binary: work/don't work, so I won't elaborate.  Good luck.
