The best resources for learning are looking at, and tweaking,
code written by others. Take a look at the code in the Samples
directory, and the KGM utilities (downloadable from the MapInfo-L
file archives at http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l/), as
well as many other mapbasic sources there.
There's also a book called "Inside MapBasic" that I have not
reviewed, but might be useful. You can get it from MapInfo or
Amazon.com or any decent tech book store.
MapInfo also offers training courses, but I wouldn't recommend
buying training before you try to do a little coding yourself.
There really is something gained in trying it on your own first
that you never get from a course (frustration builds character,
and its heat forges the best programmers!) But taking a course
AFTER you know what you want to know is best because you can ask
questions and basically get a little free consulting. I'm always
amazed when I've given training courses that half the class
usually look like deer in the headlights; they've never even
looked at any code before! You kind of have to WANT to learn, not
just "take a class" or programming isn't for you. But if you know
why you want to be there, a good training course can take you far
beyond where you would have been without it.
And of course there's people here you can ask for help, as long
as it's clear you've been trying. (You can ask even if you
haven't tried but you get a smaller response.)
