I have not done it before but can it be done in this way : 

Select the point / line of which you want to make the buffer
create a new table based on desired distance from all sides. 
do desired union / intersaction operation from both the tables !!!!!

Hello fellow listers,
Could anyone tell me if it is at all possible to set a buffer so that it
only extends out from one side of a polyline. I am trying to set buffers of
varying sizes along watercourses. The buffer distances I am setting are
different on opposite sides of the watercourse hence the desire to be able
to set different distances.
Can it be done ???
