Good morning........

I usually import the .txt file into MS Access
and let it read the 
tab delimited file. Once you have imported
the file into MS Access, save
the database, you can open the MS Access file
in MapInfo. Once the file
is opened in MapInfo, you need to save copy
as.... this will create a .tab
file that can be manipulated in MapInfo.
Close all files and open the newly
created .tab file.

Hope this solves your problem.
